That Girl Now

My legs are achy

But so are my cheeks

I’ve been smiling today

I have been for a week

And it’s not because

I don’t miss you

Or wish

It was you I was

Coming home

To

It’s because

I have enough

Love for us both

Enough for me

To walk away

Enough for you

To know

I wasn’t the one you

Wanted

And I –

I can still smile

At the strange

Shadows the light makes

On the walks we did

Together

All this poetry

Is, in fact, dramatic

For what we were

But I have enough

Love in me

To let me be

This girl

Now

The one that cries

Like a wolf at night

For the boy she loved

For the boy who let her go

It’s enough to know

I have enough

Love for us

Both

To move on

In subtle shifts

Of my hips

Looking out

At the sea that

Held us

That first night

I am

That girl

Now
